Shooting Marathons/Triathlons

Postby destes » Thu Sep 18, 2008 9:08 pm

I always seem to miss the first meeting of the year. Oh well., I'll make the next one.

I've started shooting for a guy that photographs all the races for Running Fit, plus others. Marathons, Trail Races and Triathlons. Never had so much fun taking photographs. I was doing about 2-3 races a month, but things have slowed down a bit now. He posts them on his web site for the race participants to purchase and I get anything that sells for the first three months. Not a lot, but enough to buy new toys now and then :D . Below are a few shot of some of the races.

I like the trail races the best, I get to wander around in the woods and take pictures. It's usually low light conditions, so I set up a wireless flash to kinda help things out. Here's a typical setup for me.

And here's the results.

Hope you enjoy these, see you on the 28th.

I loved the 2nd biker shot and the last runner. Both had great lighting, great colors.
Facial expressions were great too. (and non-"standard" vertical angle really helped them out too.) (that's a lot of "too"s.)

I've got to learn to think more about fill flash, I usually keep trying for a no-flash type shot and have been disappointed too often.

Great shots!
Nate

PS: I think I'm in the same club as you on missing the 1st meeting; I missed out on this year's first too!
But, I will return! ;)

I like these, and great job with the flash mount. What are you using to trigger the flash? I can't really tell from the picture.

These are all very nice. I especially like the 2nd one as well, as the sky tell part of the story I think.

Nice job.

Thanks guys. I'm using Elinchrom Skyports to trigger the flashes. Budget can't handle Pocket Wizards just yet.

I've been happy with the new CyberSync remotes form Paul C. Buff (alienbees). Not to pricy remotes run $59 and recivers run $69. They are based on the same tech as the skyports. I would also like to pick up some of the radio popper jr's when they come out.

I've read that before, but I don't think it was at that site. I think it was an article from another site. I probably got to it from http://strobist.blogspot.com/. It was a very good read, kinda the same thing I'm doing at the races I shoot. I usually just use one or two lights though.
